note = "Informa{\c{c}}{\~o}es Adicionais: On May 2004 INPE created the
DETER project (Near Real Time Deforestation Detection System) a
system for deforestation detection in near real time, developed as
an alert system to support surveillance and control of
deforestation. Based on MODIS sensor aboard of TERRA satellite,
its high temporal resolution allow near real-time detection, but
due to its coarse spatial resolution, it detects only
deforestation alerts on areas larger than 25 ha. Considering the
possibility of replacing MODIS imagery due to its major spatial
limitation, the Regional Center of the Amazon - CRA began an
experimental activity of deforestation detection using AWFIS
imagery based on a methodology similar to the DETER MODIS system.
The experimental system is named DETER-AWFIS and a subset of its
data, June to November of 2012 on the municipality of Santarem /
PA. The number of alerts detected with AWIFS was 768, about
seventy times more than MODIS image. In terms of area AWIFS based
system has accounted 3815,54 ha of deforested areas, a value
nearly 6 times bigger than MODIS image. In the last decade PRODES
historical series indicate a reduction of size on clear cut
polygons, this reduction is present in the pattern detected by the
AWIFS, where 98% of its detections belongs to the range < 25,
while there is no detection at all in the range <= 25 when using
                         MODIS data..",
